With the support of teachers and schoolmates, the annual Famine Lunch was successively held on 28 February 2024. This was a timely occasion to prepare us for the commemoration of Jesus Christ’s resurrection. During Famine Lunch, more than 400 S1-S5 students exercised self-restraint with their simple lunch, and made donations to the Lenten Campaign for the needy. Not only did the Famine Lunch educate participants about poverty and world hunger, it also promoted fasting, which is a traditional practice in Lent that aims at commemorating the 40 days Jesus Christ spent fasting in the desert and enduring temptations by Satan.
This year, we were privileged to have students from our sister school in Mainland to join us in listening to the meaningful message shared by Ms Lucia Wong, a missionary from Hong Kong Catholic Lay Missionary Association. Ms Wong shared her invaluable journey in Cambodia and described her service to the locals there. Quitting her original job as a primary school teacher, she was determined to serve the poor overseas. Ms Wong showed us photos and videos of what her team had done for the Cambodian locals to remind us to be empathetic for other people in the world.
“Whatever you did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did for me” (Matthew 25:40). In following Jesus Christ’s footsteps, we should care more for the weak so that this world can be surrounded by love and harmony. The Famine Lunch helps us to develop more compassion and understand the importance of giving. May the Lord continue to enrich our souls and instil the spirit of charity in the hearts of all Holy Familians.
